Catarina Eufémia

Description

The Catarina Eufémia project is guided by a clear ambition: to recover the memory of Portuguese seaside holiday houses through a reinterpretation rooted in contemporary architecture in Portugal. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the proposal reflects the principles of high-end architecture, where vernacular references are carefully translated into a coherent and current urban language.

Respecting the existing configuration, the design establishes a type building that functions as a matrix for the development of the entire ensemble. This approach ensures consistency across the intervention while allowing flexibility in responding to contemporary living standards.

Architectural Design, Materiality and Urban Structure

The proposal introduces seven new buildings, each aligned with present-day requirements for comfort, functionality, and spatial quality. These volumes are designed to respond to current patterns of living, ensuring well-proportioned and efficient interior layouts.

Parking is accommodated in basement levels, removing vehicles from the surface and allowing the public realm to remain open, accessible, and pedestrian-friendly. This strategy enhances the quality of the urban space and reinforces the continuity of outdoor areas.

Materiality and architectural language are defined with restraint, ensuring coherence between the new buildings and the broader context. The design aligns the seven volumes to establish a clear and unified identity, reinforcing the character of Catarina Eufémia as a cohesive urban ensemble.

Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Identity and Urban Continuity

The intervention transforms the perception of the street, evolving from a predominantly single-storey reading to a composition of two storeys with attic use. Despite this change, the ridge height is carefully controlled to maintain harmony with the existing urban fabric.

The relationship between architecture and urban identity is central to the project, ensuring that the new development strengthens the character of the place while introducing a contemporary layer.

Catarina Eufémia stands as a clear example of how architecture can reinterpret tradition with precision and clarity. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering thoughtful and context-driven urban solutions.
