Deep Blue

Description

Deep Blue is a seafood restaurant located in central Lisbon, just a few metres from the century-old olive tree where José Saramago rests. The project reflects a refined approach to contemporary architecture in Portugal, where atmosphere, identity, and material expression come together to shape a distinctive dining environment. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the space aligns with the principles of high-end architecture, combining cultural references with a strong sense of place.

The concept draws inspiration from classic French seafood houses, reinterpreted through a Portuguese lens. This duality creates a layered identity, where French bohemia meets Portuguese saudade. The result is an interior that balances familiarity and refinement, offering a nuanced and immersive experience within Lisbon’s urban context.

Architectural Design, Materiality and Atmosphere

The interior is defined by deep blue tones that envelop the space and evoke a strong connection to the sea. This chromatic choice establishes the project’s identity while contributing to a calm and cohesive atmosphere. Timber slats and stone tables introduce texture and weight, reinforcing the tactile quality of the environment and highlighting the importance of materiality in shaping perception.

Lighting plays a central role in the spatial experience. Vintage-inspired fixtures, composed of golden chains and glass globes, create a soft and refined ambiance. These elements help define transitions between areas while maintaining visual continuity throughout the space. The careful orchestration of light enhances both intimacy and clarity.

Additional layers are introduced through mirrors, brass details, and textiles, which reflect and diffuse light, adding depth and warmth. This combination of elements creates a balanced composition where each material contributes to a coherent architectural language.

Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Experience and Identity

The relationship between architecture and atmosphere is central to the Deep Blue project, guiding a design that prioritises comfort, identity, and sensory experience. The space evolves throughout the day, becoming particularly intimate and welcoming in the evening, where light, colour, and material converge to create a sense of calm.

Deep Blue stands as a clear example of how architecture can elevate hospitality environments through precision and restraint. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering sophisticated and context-driven design solutions.
