Palácio de Azeitão
Description
The Palácio de Azeitão project involves the restoration and extension of the 16th-century Palácio dos Duques de Aveiro, introducing a mixed-use programme that includes a hotel and residential units. This intervention reflects a careful and strategic approach to contemporary architecture in Portugal, where heritage preservation and new functional requirements are thoughtfully integrated. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the project embodies the principles of high-end architecture, balancing historical value with contemporary living standards.
The proposal seeks to return the palace to the village as a building of strong patrimonial and cultural significance, while equipping it with the infrastructure necessary to support its new uses. The programme includes T1 and T2 apartments, as well as T3 and T4 houses, ensuring a diverse and adaptable residential offering alongside the hospitality component.
Architectural Design, Materiality and Heritage Integration
The intervention is guided by a clear objective: to restore and preserve the architectural and constructive elements that define the identity of the palace, while introducing new spaces that support contemporary functionality. The design respects the existing structure, ensuring that the original character remains legible throughout the project.
Materiality plays a central role in establishing continuity between past and present. Restoration is carried out with precision, preserving key elements and reinforcing the authenticity of the building. New additions are carefully integrated, maintaining a coherent architectural language and a balanced relationship with the historic fabric.
A fundamental aspect of the project is the connection between the existing palace and the new extension. This relationship is reinforced through a network of green and leisure outdoor areas, which structure the site and create a seamless transition between built and landscape elements.
Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Heritage, Living and Landscape
The relationship between architecture and landscape is central to the Palácio de Azeitão project, ensuring that the intervention extends beyond the building itself to create a complete and immersive environment. Outdoor spaces are designed to enhance usability and allow users to fully experience the site and its historical value.
Palácio de Azeitão stands as a clear example of how architectural rehabilitation and expansion can revitalise heritage assets while introducing contemporary programmes. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering sophisticated and context-sensitive projects.
