Reinterpreting heritage in a contemporary context

Located between Praça D. Pedro IV and Praça da Figueira, the Zara Rossio project represents a careful intervention in a 200-year-old Pombaline building. Rather than creating a conventional retail space, the project aims to bring new life to the structure while preserving its historic identity.

The approach is rooted in a sensitive understanding of the site. Instead of isolating the building, the design enhances its connection to the city, transforming it into a permeable space that interacts naturally with the surrounding urban fabric.

Architecture in dialogue with history

Preservation as a guiding principle

Preserving the Pombaline character was central to the project. Original elements such as historic tiles and decorative paintings were carefully integrated into the new design, ensuring continuity between past and present.

This approach avoids a generic retail aesthetic and reinforces the uniqueness of the space. The architecture becomes a narrative tool, where history remains visible and meaningful.

Spatial fluidity and urban connection

The interior layout was designed to promote continuity and openness. The ground floor acts as an extension of the street, inviting visitors in and strengthening the relationship with the public realm.

Strategic openings and the use of existing light wells allow natural light to flow throughout the building. This creates a sense of spatial fluidity that aligns with contemporary needs while respecting the original structure.

A retail experience shaped by local identity

The project combines retail with social and cultural elements. A café space, integrated within the store, maintains a connection to Lisbon’s local traditions, offering a more layered and experiential environment.

References to historic establishments in the city reinforce this connection, creating a setting where commerce and cultural memory coexist. The result is a space that feels both contemporary and deeply rooted in its context.

Subtle engineering and material balance

Modern technical solutions were introduced with restraint. Whenever possible, original materials were preserved, and new interventions were designed to blend seamlessly with the existing architecture.

This balance ensures that technical requirements do not overshadow the historical narrative. The project stands out for its ability to integrate innovation without disrupting the identity of the building.

A project that strengthens Contacto Atlântico’s global recognition

Being featured on Urdesign reinforces Contacto Atlântico’s position as a studio capable of handling complex architectural challenges, combining heritage, functionality and contemporary design.

Through an integrated approach and a strong attention to detail, the studio continues to deliver projects that respond to both local context and international standards.
