Armani Store

Description

The Armani Store occupies the ground floor and basement of a historic 1888 building on Avenida da Liberdade, with an additional frontage on Rua Barata Salgueiro. This intervention represents a refined approach to contemporary architecture in Portugal, where the objective is to adapt the space into a flagship retail environment while preserving the integrity of the existing building. The project reflects the principles of high-end architecture, balancing brand identity with a careful and minimal impact on the property.

The strategy strengthens the presence of the Armani Store along one of Lisbon’s most prestigious avenues, ensuring that the building engages with its urban context while maintaining its architectural character.

Architectural Design, Materiality and Identity

On the exterior, the intervention focuses on enhancing visibility and accessibility. The shopfronts are lowered to pavement level, improving the connection between interior and public space. Frames and glazing are replaced with safer and more efficient solutions, while the existing stonework is carefully cleaned using non-abrasive methods. The introduction of new signage with the brand’s logo reinforces the store’s identity, ensuring a clear and elegant presence within the streetscape.

Materiality is treated with precision, ensuring continuity between the historic fabric and contemporary elements. The intervention maintains the original expression of the building while introducing subtle updates that enhance performance and durability.

Inside, the design preserves generous open-plan areas, allowing flexibility in display and circulation. The existing staircase is refurbished, maintaining its architectural presence, and a lift is introduced to improve accessibility. The intervention focuses exclusively on non-structural partitions, reorganising the layout to clarify circulation and optimise perimeter display zones.

Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Heritage and Retail Experience

The relationship between architecture and brand identity is central to the project, guiding a design that aligns spatial clarity with the expectations of a flagship store. The intervention enhances the retail experience while respecting the historical context of the building.

Armani Store stands as a clear example of how architectural precision can elevate commercial spaces without compromising heritage. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering refined and context-sensitive retail environments.
