Loulé Hospital
Description
The Loulé Hospital designed by Contacto Atlântico project was conceived to enhance a key healthcare facility in southern Portugal. Located in the centre of Loulé, the intervention aimed to expand the existing hospital building while improving its functional performance and spatial identity.
The architecture respects the urban context while asserting a clear visual identity through vertical elements and shading fins. These features reduce solar gain and contribute to the contemporary character of the façade. The intervention creates a dialogue between the original structure and the new extension, enhancing the hospital’s presence in the city.
Interior spaces are organized to promote fluid circulation between departments. Glazed courtyards and large openings allow natural light to penetrate deep into the building, improving comfort for patients and medical staff. Functional clarity and intuitive navigation were key design drivers.
The project complies with all healthcare standards, including accessibility, safety, and technical performance. Materials were selected for their resilience, low maintenance, and long-term durability.
Loulé Hospital reflects a balance between technical rigor and human-centered care. This facility now serves as a reference in healthcare architecture in the Algarve.
