House in Lapa II
Description
House in Lapa II is located in one of Lisbon’s most prestigious neighbourhoods, Lapa, known for its residential character, quiet tree-lined streets, and proximity to emblematic urban parks such as Jardim da Estrela and Santos. This project represents a refined intervention in contemporary architecture in Portugal, focused on the rehabilitation of an existing building with three floors and attic space above ground, as well as a basement. Originally used as a residence for members of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, the building carries a strong historical identity that informs the architectural approach.
The main objective of the project was to rehabilitate a structure that had become physically degraded and functionally inadequate. The proposal integrates innovative and sustainable solutions, enhancing performance while respecting the existing fabric. This approach aligns with the principles of high-end architecture, where heritage, functionality, and long-term value are carefully balanced.
Architectural Design, Materiality and Organisation
The intervention redefines the internal layout, creating more generous and clearly structured spaces. Social and private areas are expanded and reorganised to support contemporary living standards, ensuring both comfort and efficiency. The project establishes a clear spatial hierarchy, organised into three main zones: social, private, and leisure.
Materiality is treated with precision, balancing restoration with the introduction of new elements that improve durability and performance. The architectural language remains controlled and coherent, allowing the building’s original character to coexist with contemporary solutions.
The reconfiguration enhances circulation and spatial clarity, creating a more fluid and intuitive experience throughout the house. Each area is carefully designed to respond to its function while maintaining a strong architectural identity.
Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Rehabilitation and Living Experience
The relationship between architecture and heritage is central to the House in Lapa II project, guiding a design that respects the building’s past while adapting it to present-day needs. The intervention contributes to the revitalisation of the Lapa neighbourhood, reinforcing its residential quality and urban continuity.
House in Lapa II stands as a clear example of how architectural rehabilitation can transform existing structures into contemporary homes. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering sophisticated residential projects that combine tradition, innovation, and design excellence.
