House in Lapa

Description

The House in Lapa is a residential project located in one of Lisbon’s most emblematic neighbourhoods, positioned between Estrela Park and expansive views over the Tagus River. This intervention reflects a refined approach to contemporary architecture in Portugal, where the objective is to enhance the qualities of the existing building while introducing a renewed and carefully balanced architectural identity. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the project aligns with the principles of high-end architecture, combining heritage, comfort, and contemporary living.

The strategy focuses on preserving the character of the original structure while refining its spatial and material expression. This approach ensures continuity with the building’s identity, allowing it to evolve without losing its architectural essence or its connection to the surrounding urban context.

Architectural Design, Materiality and Living Experience

The most significant transformation takes place on the top floor, where a new wooden roof is introduced. This element discreetly conceals technical equipment while integrating naturally into the architectural composition. A custom wooden wardrobe complements the intervention, adding both functionality and warmth to the space. These subtle additions enhance the living room environment, making it more inviting while framing views over Lapa’s rooftops and the Tagus River.

On the remaining floors, the intervention simplifies spatial lines and removes suspended ceilings, restoring clarity and proportion. Outdated materials are replaced with higher-quality finishes, reinforcing a more refined and comfortable living environment. This approach highlights the importance of materiality, ensuring consistency between the original structure and contemporary updates.

Natural light and views play a central role in shaping the interior experience. The project enhances the connection between the house and its surroundings, allowing residents to engage with the city’s landscape in a direct and continuous way.

Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Heritage and Contemporary Living

The relationship between architecture and context is fundamental to the project, ensuring that the building remains rooted in its historical and urban setting while adapting to modern standards of living. The intervention respects the Portuguese identity of the house while introducing a subtle influence of Iberian architectural language and contemporary design.

House in Lapa stands as a clear example of how architectural rehabilitation can elevate residential spaces through precision and restraint. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering refined and context-sensitive projects.
