Jonas Bar
Description
The Jonas Bar project proposes the refurbishment of an existing beach café in Estoril, transforming it into a contemporary structure aligned with contemporary architecture in Portugal. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the intervention reflects the principles of high-end architecture, where form, landscape, and public use are carefully integrated.
Located along the Atlantic coast between Cascais and São João do Estoril, the building is reimagined as a new meeting point on the seafront. The project establishes a strong connection with its maritime setting, enhancing both the identity of the place and its role within the coastal landscape.
Architectural Design, Materiality and Landscape Integration
The defining architectural gesture is a white, undulating canopy that shapes the entire intervention. This element creates a walkable rooftop, functioning simultaneously as a viewpoint, amphitheatre, and social terrace. It introduces a dynamic relationship between architecture and landscape, offering new ways to experience the Atlantic front.
Beneath this structure, a linear glazed volume accommodates the bar and restaurant functions. The transparency of this volume reinforces the visual connection to the sea, while protected outdoor terraces extend the interior spaces and allow for year-round use.
Materiality is approached with clarity and restraint, supporting a coherent architectural language that enhances durability and integration with the coastal environment. The design aligns form and function, ensuring that each element contributes to both performance and spatial quality.
Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Public Space and Coastal Identity
The relationship between architecture and landscape is central to the Jonas Bar project, ensuring a seamless integration between built form and its surroundings. The intervention strengthens the link between public space and the Atlantic, creating a place that invites permanence and social interaction.
Jonas Bar stands as a clear example of how architecture can redefine existing structures through a precise and site-responsive approach. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering refined, context-driven projects.
