JLL

Description

The JLL project reflects a strategic intervention within contemporary architecture in Portugal, focused on revitalising one of the first attempts to establish a shopping centre in the heart of Lisbon. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the project operates within the constraints of a building classified as a property of public interest, requiring a careful balance between preservation and transformation. This approach aligns with the principles of high-end architecture, where clarity of concept and precision in execution guide the intervention.

The objective is to reactivate the building’s commercial potential while respecting its heritage value, introducing targeted changes that improve accessibility and urban integration.

Architectural Design, Materiality and Urban Activation

The concept developed is both simple and transformative. A key decision was to open direct access from the street into the building, following approval from the heritage authority. This intervention redefines the relationship between the interior and the city, transforming the space into an active retail walkway.

By establishing this connection, the project allows people to move freely between the street and the interior, creating a continuous flow that enhances visibility and accessibility for the retail units. The new entrance acts as a catalyst, drawing visitors into the building and guiding them through the existing internal passages.

Materiality and architectural language are handled with restraint, ensuring that the intervention remains compatible with the existing structure. The design reinforces spatial clarity and legibility, allowing the renewed circulation to become the defining element of the experience.

Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Heritage and Commercial Experience

The relationship between architecture and urban life is central to the JLL project, ensuring that the building regains its role within the city. By reopening connections and improving circulation, the intervention restores vitality and relevance to the space.

This project demonstrates how targeted architectural strategies can reactivate underused commercial environments while respecting heritage constraints. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering precise, context-driven solutions.
