São Julião
Description
The São Julião project focuses on rehabilitating and reusing a historic Pombaline building in Lisbon’s city center. The proposal remodels the existing structure to transform it into a tourism facility on the upper floors, complemented by a restaurant on the ground level.
The exterior keeps its authentic Pombaline façade, marked by proportion and rhythm, while subtle adjustments improve coherence and function. Over time, several changes altered the interior layout, yet many original architectural details — including window alignments and decorative features — remain visible and form the base of this intervention.
The rehabilitation of São Julião prioritizes conservation over replacement. The team restores the Pombaline structure and main heritage components and introduces new elements only where necessary.
The goal is to revive the building’s urban presence, ensuring its historic character remains visible and relevant in today’s Lisbon.
