Rossio 62
Description
Rossio 62 represents a careful intervention in contemporary architecture in Portugal, focused on the rehabilitation of one of the buildings that define Praça D. Pedro IV, in the historic centre of Lisbon. The project aims to restore the original reading of a structure that has undergone multiple alterations over time, re-establishing its architectural coherence while adapting it to current uses. This approach reflects a balance between preservation and high-end architecture, where heritage and contemporary needs are aligned with precision.
The building comprises five storeys above ground and one basement level. The intervention redefines the internal organisation to suit the intended programme, ensuring clarity in circulation and a logical distribution of functions. This restructuring allows the building to respond to present-day requirements while maintaining its historical identity and spatial memory.
Architectural Design, Materiality and Programme
Inside, the layout is designed to provide clear routes and well-defined uses, reinforcing both functionality and spatial legibility. The intervention avoids unnecessary transformations, focusing instead on enhancing existing qualities and ensuring a coherent architectural reading. This approach highlights the importance of materiality and restraint in rehabilitation projects, where continuity and precision are essential.
At ground level, the retail units are carefully addressed. The former telecommunications shop is redesigned to align with the new architectural framework, while Café Gelo and the Espingardaria are preserved in their current state, maintaining their established presence within Rossio. In addition, the pharmacy annex is removed, allowing the façade to recover its original composition and architectural integrity.
Leading Architecture Firm in Portugal: Heritage and Urban Identity
The relationship between architecture and heritage is central to the Rossio 62 project. Each intervention is guided by the objective of reinforcing the building’s identity within its urban context, contributing to the continuity of one of Lisbon’s most emblematic public spaces.
By restoring the façade and reorganising the interior with clarity and purpose, the project achieves a balanced architectural renewal. As part of Contacto Atlântico’s portfolio, Rossio 62 reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for its ability to deliver precise and contextually sensitive interventions.
