America’s Cup

Description

America’s Cup, a project designed for the Marina of Lisbon in 2003, is a riverside urban plan conceived to strengthen the relationship between the city and the river. From the outset, America’s Cup defines the Marina of Lisbon as the central core of the proposal. The plan brings together an international event, public space and long-term urban use within a single and coherent structure.

Urban structure and waterfront

The project is organised along the waterfront. Public spaces follow the river edge and create a continuous urban frontage. As a result, the riverfront becomes more accessible and more active. In addition, the layout ensures open views and a clear reading of the territory.

America’s Cup establishes a public urban edge facing the water. This edge supports movement, permanence and daily use. Therefore, the river no longer acts as a boundary but becomes part of everyday city life.

Public space and mobility

Pedestrian mobility plays a central role in the plan. Wide walkways connect the different areas of the project. At the same time, tree-lined avenues organise access and circulation. In this way, movement across the site feels clear and comfortable.

Moreover, public space extends continuously along the waterfront. Squares, promenades and resting areas support urban life throughout the day. Consequently, the riverfront remains active beyond the event itself.

Marina and functional programme

The Marina of Lisbon integrates mooring areas and nautical infrastructure. These zones connect directly with public spaces and event support areas. As a result, America’s Cup combines urban and port-related functions in a coherent manner.

The plan also distributes complementary functions across the territory. Cascais accommodates regatta logistics and events. Oeiras operates as an intermediate support area. In this way, America’s Cup establishes a balanced metropolitan waterfront system.

Housing and urban scale

Housing integrates into the plan in a controlled and clear manner. Buildings maintain regular volumes and a balanced scale. Thus, they provide comfort, views and a direct relationship with public space.

Overall, America’s Cup proposes an integrated urban model for the Marina of Lisbon. The project strengthens the connection between the city and the river. In addition, it creates a waterfront prepared both for a major international event and for everyday urban life.
