TagusPark

Description

The proposal developed for the central hub building at Taguspark introduces a refined architectural intervention that redefines the arrival experience within one of the most significant business and innovation campuses in Portugal. Designed by Contacto Atlântico, a top architecture firm in Portugal, the project establishes a new monumental entrance that elevates the identity and presence of the existing facilities. This approach reflects a clear commitment to contemporary architecture in Portugal, where precision, clarity, and contextual integration guide every design decision.

The intervention is conceived as an autonomous architectural element with a strong identity, while maintaining a coherent dialogue with the broader Taguspark environment. This includes its relationship with the existing artworks across the campus and the visual language associated with the Urban Art Museum. The result is an architectural gesture that is both distinctive and seamlessly integrated, reinforcing the cultural and spatial continuity of the site.

Architectural Design, Functionality and Materiality

The architectural concept evolved from an initial façade strategy that included a revolving door. However, the need to comply with current fire safety regulations led to a reconfiguration of the entrance system. This adaptation ensured improved accessibility and circulation, reinforcing the functional performance of the building while maintaining the integrity of the design.

The introduction of a canopy plays a central role in redefining the entrance sequence. Beyond providing permanent protection from weather conditions, it creates a more welcoming and legible point of arrival. The canopy also defines a transitional waiting area, enhancing user comfort and contributing to a more structured and intuitive experience. This careful integration of function and design reflects the principles of high-end architecture, where usability and spatial quality are equally prioritised.

Materiality is approached with precision and consistency. The intervention incorporates lacquered metal profiles integrated into a guard element, chromatically aligned with the existing frames. This ensures visual continuity and reinforces a cohesive architectural language. The restrained use of materials enhances the clarity of the intervention while contributing to its refined character.

Identity, Urban Integration and Architectural Expression

As with many interventions within Taguspark, the project introduces a subtle symbolic dimension. The arrangement of the metal profiles allows the word “Taguspark” to be read in Morse code, embedding a discreet narrative within the architectural composition. This gesture reinforces the project’s identity while maintaining a sense of restraint and sophistication, aligned with the ethos of architecture in Portugal that values both concept and precision.

At canopy level, the design operates as a formal connector between distinct geometries. It mediates between the orthogonal language of the existing building and a more cylindrical volume, generating a continuous curve that unifies the composition. This architectural transition strengthens the coherence of the ensemble and consolidates the entrance as a key spatial moment within the campus.

This project exemplifies Contacto Atlântico’s approach to architecture, where innovation, context, and design excellence converge. As part of its portfolio, it reinforces the studio’s position as a leading architecture firm in Portugal, recognised for delivering interventions that combine technical rigor with a strong architectural identity.
